The Seth Rogen/James Franco assassination comedy The Interview earned about $15 million from online streaming, with more than 2 million people renting or buying the film since it was released online Christmas Eve. At the box office, though, The Interview earned a more modest $2.8 million, in part because it played on only 331 theaters nationwide.

In comparison, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, dominated the four-day Christmas weekend, grossing $54.5 million in its second week in theaters. Angelina Jolie's directorial debut, Unbroken, came in second, earning $47.3 million at the box office, and the musical Into The Woods earned $46.1 million.
