Tweet this: In early 2015, Twitter says it will open an office in Hong Kong.
Since 2009, Twitter has been banned from operating in China, the BBC reports, since the government is afraid the service will be used to spread information on protests. Twitter said the office will enable the company to "pursue strategic opportunities" in Greater China.
This will be the fifth Twitter office in the region, joining operations in Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, and Sydney, with a location in Jakarta expected to open soon. "With half of all internet, mobile, and social media users worldwide in Asia today, we see many opportunities across the region," a Twitter spokesperson said.
