Patrick Cannon, former Democratic mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, was sentenced to house arrest for voting in Tuesday's midterm elections.

During a hearing Thursday, Cannon said he didn't know that it was illegal for him to vote as a convicted felon.

Cannon was sentenced in October to 44 months in prison for taking bribes from undercover federal agents. He will remain under house arrest until he arrives in prison on Nov. 18.
