Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) on Friday doubled down on her remark that the South has "not always been the friendliest" place for African-Americans.

"Everyone knows this is the truth," she said, "and I will continue to speak the truth even as some would twist my words seeking political advantage."

Republicans had seized on Landrieu's comment, offered in a Thursday interview with NBC's Chuck Todd, to accuse her of calling her constituents bigots. Landrieu is one of the most vulnerable Democratic Senators facing re-election this year. FiveThirtyEight gives her a mere 22 percent chance of retaining her seat.
