Boston Globe endorses GOP gubernatorial candidate for first time in 20 years
Charlie Baker's surging campaign received more good news this weekend, as Baker became the first Republican gubernatorial candidate in two decades to win the backing of The Boston Globe in a general election.
Massachusetts' largest newspaper on Sunday endorsed Baker over Democratic Attorney General Martha Coakley. Though a Baker administration "may have its awkward moments," the paper wrote, the candidate was well-equipped for the job and would "provide the best counterpoint to the instincts of an overwhelmingly Democratic Legislature."
The Globe last endorsed a GOP gubernatorial candidate in 1994, when it supported incumbent Gov. Bill Weld's re-election.

The Globe also sided against Coakley in the Democratic primary this year, saying she hadn't "fully explained why she wants to be governor or sketched out her policy priorities in sufficient detail."
