Hurricane Odile is on course to pass very close by or over the southern end of the Baja California peninsula late Sunday and into the early hours of Monday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center says.
On Sunday afternoon, the hurricane's maximum sustained winds were 125 mph, The Associated Press reports. Odile was downgraded from a Category 4 to a Category 3, but is still expected to bring heavy rains, intense surf, and high winds to Baja — and it could gain steam as it approaches land.
The state of Baja California Sur has ordered the evacuation of coastal areas, including parts of Cabo San Lucas, and shelters have been set up for up to 30,000 people. Residents are stocking up on food, water, batteries, and flashlights, and guests staying in hotels have been advised to stay inside their rooms with their bags packed.
