Feds withheld $2.4 million for 12,000 veterans by accident this month
Twelve thousand disabled veterans did not receive their compensation checks this month as the federal government withheld $2.4 million by mistake.
According to Fox News, the error affected vets participating in repayment plans, wherein part of the veterans' disability payment is withheld to cover a debt owed to the agency. This time, though, the agency, which has been riddled with scandals surrounding delays and waitlists at health clinics and general incompetency, "kept the compensation checks and sent the veterans only the amount they would have repaid the VA."
USA Today reports that the Department of Veterans Affairs apologized for the "withholding error" and says it has "worked with the U.S. Department of Treasury to pay back all the money either by direct deposit or with checks sent by mail."
