After NATO and Ukraine expressed skepticism that Russia's convoy of aid trucks headed to war-torn eastern Ukraine was a good-faith effort to relieve a humanitarian crisis, the Associated Press reports that Ukraine will deny the trucks entry unless they are unloaded by the Red Cross.
With more than 1,300 deaths in the fight between pro-Russian separatists and government forces in Ukraine, aid from the Red Cross would be welcome. But Ukraine said the trucks Russia sent were not approved by the Red Cross and could be a military operation disguised as aid.
"At this stage we have no agreement on this, and it looks like the initiative of the Russian Federation," Andre Loersch, a spokesperson for the Red Cross, told the AP. According to an agreement reached Monday between Ukraine and Russia, only Red Cross-approved aid trucks can cross the border. The trucks in question are currently en route from Moscow to eastern Ukraine.
