40 percent of colleges haven't investigated a sexual assault claim in five years

Many colleges are breaking the law by not properly investigating alleged sexual assaults on campus, according to a report released Wednesday by Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.)

The report, based on a survey of more than 300 colleges nationwide, found that one in five institutions allowed their athletic departments to have some oversight of cases involving student athletes. Worse, the survey found that more than 40 percent of colleges nationwide hadn't conducted a single sexual assault investigation in the last five years.

The latter stat, McCaskill said, "means they're saying that there have been zero incidents of sexual assault on their campuses in the last five years. That is hard to believe."
