Rick Perry: 'I'm more Jewish than you think I am'

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) recently sat down with The New York Times' Mark Leibovich to reflect on his political career and discuss a potential 2016 White House run. Yet in the broader look at whether Perry can ever overcome his big "oops" moment and become a viable national candidate again, this passage about him wooing Jewish GOPers in California sticks out above all else:
We were sitting at Nate 'n Al, the Jewish Deli in Beverly Hills, and the governor of Texas was looking every bit the regular customer in a tight black polo shirt and designer glasses..."I'm more Jewish than you think I am," he told me. "I read the part of the Bible that said the Jews are God's chosen people." [The New York Times]
Rick Perry attends an evangelical-leaning megachurch and in April was baptized in a Texas river.
