RNC sets slimmed down primary debate schedule

The Republican National Committee announced its presidential primary debate schedule. The nine debates this summer, with the potential to add another three in the fall, is a marked decrease from 2012's 22 primary jousts, NBC News notes.

Republicans say a rigorous debate schedule during the last cycle exposed problems for eventual nominee Mitt Romney that Democrats later capitalized on. They also want more conservatives involved in the primary debate process.
