High-ranking Iranian general killed in airstrike in Syria

On Monday, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed in a statement that high-ranking Brig. Gen. Mohammad Ali Allahdadi was killed Sunday during an Israeli airstrike in Syria. In addition to Allahdadi, six Hezbollah members were also killed in the airstrike, including Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of a Hezbollah military strategist killed in 2008. Mughniyeh's funeral was attended by thousands in Beirut on Monday.

The statement called the airstrike a "criminal attack," and said that the general was in the area to provide "consultation" to Syrian authorities fighting against "terrorists," the Los Angeles Times reports. The strike took place in the Quneitra region of Syria, near the Golan Heights, with reports saying it either came from an Israeli helicopter or drone aircraft.
