Poll: Both parties are historically unpopular

In the 23 years that Gallup pollsters have asked Americans their opinion on both major parties, the Democrats and Republicans have never been as simultaneously unpopular as they are now.

Just 37 percent view the GOP favorably, while the Democrats barely fare better with 39 percent approval.

This is the first time both parties have scored below 40 percent at the same time. While Democrats momentarily netted 51 percent approval after the 2012 elections, both parties have otherwise stayed below 50 percent since 2010.
