At least five people were killed Sunday and three remain missing after several tornadoes hit communities in Texas and Arkansas.

In Van, Texas, 50 to 100 homes and schools were destroyed, several people were injured, and at least two people were killed after a tornado hit the tiny town. On Monday morning, eight people were unaccounted for, but five were eventually found alive, and authorities said they would continue to search for the missing three. Meteorologist Greg Carbin with the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, said that preliminary reports indicate 20 to 25 tornadoes formed in South Dakota, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas on Sunday, in what is "certainly not an atypical system for spring where you’ve got the remnants of winter but the onset of summer."
