Militants claim 30 peacekeepers dead in Somali attack

Al Shabab militants are claiming to have killed 30 African Union peacekeepers in an attack on the Somali city of Leego. The Islamist militants broke through the fence around the AU base with a car bomb and opened fire on the peacekeepers. The African Union Mission has confirmed the Leego attack.

Al Shabab, an Islamic group that opposes the Western-backed government in Somalia, has been launching a series of attacks since the Muslim holy month of Ramadan began last week. The attack in Leego coincided with morning prayers.

Friday morning has been violent globally, with three other attacks carried out on three different continents: An attack in France killed one and wounded two; an attack in Kuwait has killed at least 16, according to the latest reports; and in Tunisia, at least 27 were killed by gunmen near two hotels.
