Archaeologists discover ancient Greek town under the Aegean Sea
Archaeologists may have found Greece's real-life Atlantis with the discovery of a third millennium B.C. Greek settlement buried at the bottom of the Aegean Sea's Argolic Gulf. The unearthed town, which is located between one to three meters beneath the surface and is believed to have once been fortified by the seaside, covers an area of three acres and contains building foundations and paved streets.
This discovery comes just a year after archaeologists launched an expedition to explore prehistoric landscapes at the bottom of the Argolic Gulf. Though the team has not yet presented its preliminary findings on the site, the scientists had theorized that such a discovery could provide further insight into how much Greece shaped the rise and spread of the Neolithic life from the Middle East to Europe.
The team's investigation will wrap up Friday and they will present their research to the public on August 16 and 17, meaning more findings are still to come. Photos have of the settlement have not yet been released.
