Straight Outta Compton totally crushed the box office this weekend, setting a record for R-rated August premieres. But if you haven't gone yet to see the N.W.A biopic, sit back and let Selma director Ava DuVernay tell you why it's worth your time.

DuVernay, who grew up in Compton, California in the 1980s, was personally moved by what she saw on screen, and she shared her feelings about the film's depictions of race, gender, and hip hop in a series of eloquent tweets.
