Tokyo Olympic organizers announced Monday that they want to add five new sports to the 2020 games: Baseball and softball, karate, skateboarding, climbing, and surfing. The 2020 host city's proposed additions follow Olympic reforms last December that opened up the opportunity for host cities to propose additional events.

Tokyo's five-sport proposal is a pared-down version of a previous list that included bowling, squash, and washu, a type of martial art. Ultimately, the chairman of the committee for choosing new sports told AFP that they chose sports that "are popular among younger generations and have wide support in Japan."
