At least six fundraising emails seeking to capitalize on the event's publicity have gone out since Democrats began their gun control sit-in at the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

The emails were sent by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which works to fund and organize Democratic House races, and were signed by representatives including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California.

"This is an historically important moment! John Lewis has been leading a sit-in on the House floor for 11 long hours now. We’re fighting to prevent gun violence," one Pelosi email says. "The Republicans refuse to lift a finger. It’s shameful. I need your help to defeat them once and for all." The note asks for 6,000 donations from supporters, though it is unclear how sending campaign contributions will help already-elected representatives pass a bill.
