Late Thursday night, two snipers firing from an elevated position shot at least 11 police officers at the end of a peaceful protest. Demonstrators were gathering after the fatal officer-involved shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.

Local newspapers are working overnight to cover the incident and its aftermath. The Dallas Morning News chose to sum up the tragedy with one word: ambush. Its Friday morning front page is below. Kimberly Alters
