Rep. Scalise remains in critical condition, will need additional surgeries

The MedStar Washington Hospital Center released an update Wednesday night on House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), revealing that the congressman, who was shot Wednesday morning during practice for a baseball game, remains in critical condition.

In a statement, the hospital said Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip, with the bullet traveling "across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding." He was transported to the Level I trauma center in shock, and immediately entered surgery and underwent an additional procedure to stop bleeding.

Scalise's condition is critical, the hospital said, he has received multiple units of blood transfusion, and he will require additional operations. The hospital added that it will provide periodic updates on his progress.
