John McCain's family is not happy that the late senator is appearing in two political ads targeting Democratic candidates in Arizona and Michigan.
The ads by the National Republican Congressional Committee attack Ann Kirkpatrick, running in Arizona's 2nd Congressional District, and Elissa Slotkin, a candidate in Michigan's 8th District.
The Kirkpatrick ad features a clip from 2016, when Kirkpatrick tried to unseat McCain. McCain is heard saying Kirkpatrick is unopposed to "higher taxes," "more federal spending," and "increased debts that slow economic growth." The Slotkin ad includes footage from a Senate hearing in which McCain bluntly tells Slotkin, "you either don't know the truth, or you are not telling the truth."
A spokesman for the McCain family said in a statement to NBC News that the "family believes it's unfortunate that the senator's image is being weaponized this election season. They hope that there would be more respect, especially so soon after his passing." McCain died in August of brain cancer. A spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee told NBC News the "ad speaks for itself." Catherine Garcia
