No one needed to ask actress Jenifer Lewis who she was wearing on the red carpet on Monday night — the giant swoosh gave it away. Rather than show up to the 2018 Emmy Awards in the expected designer gown, the Black-ish star stood out in her Nike athleisure look. When asked about the custom sweater, she told Variety that she went with the outfit to applaud Nike "for supporting Colin Kaepernick and his protest against racial injustice and police brutality."
Lewis said she had asked herself: "What can I do? What can I do that's meaningful? I'll wear Nike. I'll wear Nike to say thank you. Thank you for leading the resistance! We need more corporate America to stand up also."
Black-ish is nominated for outstanding comedy series. While Lewis, who plays Ruby Johnson on the show, was not nominated for an Emmy, several of her co-stars, including Anthony Anderson, were. Thirty-six people of color, including 28 people of African descent, were nominated across acting categories at the 2018 Emmys — a record.
