Manchin won a special election in 2010, following the death of Sen. Robert Byrd (D), and won re-election in 2012. He has a history of voting with Republicans, including to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Morrisey is the two-term Republican state attorney general, who previously worked as a lobbyist for the pharmaceutical industry.
President Trump won the state in 2016 by 42 points, his largest margin of victory, but the state actually has more registered Democrats than Republicans — 42 percent to 32 percent. In 2014, only 37.4 percent of registered voters cast their ballots during the midterm election.
