Defending U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka was defeated in the fourth round on Monday by Belinda Bencic, 7-5, 6-4.

Osaka, ranked No. 1, sustained a knee injury two weeks ago, and told reporters after the game that while she had a "feeling of sadness ... I also feel like I have learned so much during this tournament. ... I feel like the steps that I have taken as a person have been much greater than I would imagine at this point."
