What happened A FlyDubai flight from the United Arab Emirates to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia yesterday after the copilot stabbed the captain in an apparent attempt to crash the plane. The airplane plunged more than 15,000 feet in about a minute before passengers and crew who heard the commotion rushed the deck and subdued the copilot, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and people on the flight. Two off-duty pilots took over the flight controls and steadied the plane. “Onlookers cheered” as the “shaken passengers,” most of them Israelis, landed in Tel Aviv last night on a replacement FlyDubai aircraft, The Associated Press said.
Who said what Passenger videos showed the stabbed pilot and his copilot covered in blood, and both men were hospitalized after the plane landed in Tabuk. Netanyahu said the copilot, whom he identified as an Omani national, was arrested and under interrogation in Saudi Arabia. The Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, is a “true hero,” Netanyahu said on social media. “Despite being stabbed,” he “opened the cockpit door” so the passengers and crew could “overpower the attacker,” saving 174 lives.
Saudi authorities “initially assessed that the co-pilot tried to deliberately crash the plane,” The Wall Street Journal said, citing sources. “They don’t yet have a theory about a motive” or possible accomplices, but the “near-disaster sent a shudder” through the war-torn region and “raised a host of troubling possibilities.”
What next? FlyDubai said it was suspending all flights to and from Israel while the incident is investigated. Israel, which already “has some of the most stringent airline security measures worldwide,” pledged to increase them, the AP said.
