Leonardo DiCaprio affects a “smooth, sun-kissed charisma” as Jay Gatsby, but this manic recent adaptation of the classic novel doesn’t have much time for characters, said Entertainment Weekly. Director Baz Luhrmann instead “piles on the flash,” blinding us to the story’s simple power.

“In the history of movies about love, Amour shall last forever,” said Time. The winner of this year’s Oscar for best foreign film charts the final days of a Parisian couple’s long marriage and features “incandescent” performances by stars Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant.

John Frankenheimer’s dark cult classic features Rock Hudson in perhaps his greatest role, said Slate.com. When an aging New York banker pays to be transformed into a young stud, Hudson takes over the lead, and contributes mightily to the film’s “mood of ineffable cosmic dread.”
