China’s beer-war victory, and HP’s Google conversion

Good day for numerical superiority, Bad day for opening Windows

GOOD DAY FOR: Numerical superiority, after the Chinese beer Snow overtook Bud Light as the world’s best-selling beer, according to data from Plato Logic. Snow, brewed by SABMiller and a Chinese partner, sold 61 million hectoliters in 2008; Bud Light, now owned by SABMiller rival InBev, sold 55.6 million hectoliters. China also extended its lead as the world’s largest beer market. InBev disputes the findings, though, arguing that Snow includes 25 varieties and that Budweiser is still No. 1 if you combine its various Bud brands. (Reuters)

BAD DAY FOR: Opening Windows, after Hewlett-Packard, the world’s largest computer maker, said it is “studying” Google’s Android operating system for use in some of its laptops, likely the compact netbooks. Netbooks, which generally run on Windows XP now, are the rare bright spot in the recession-hit computer industry. (BusinessWeek)
