Sex appeal, staying aloft
GOOD DAY FOR: Sex appeal, after “Sex in the City,” the R-rated film version of the hit HBO series, unexpectedly topped last week’s winner, “Indiana Jones,” at the domestic box office, bringing in $55.7 million. About 85 percent of the ticket buyers for the film were women. Analysts had expected “Sex in the City” to bring in about $25 million in its first weekend. (The New York Times, free registration)
BAD DAY FOR: Staying aloft, after the International Air Transport Association estimated that airlines worldwide could collectively report a loss of $2.3 billion this year. That estimate was based on $107-a-barrel oil. At $135 a barrel, the loss could be $6.1 billion. IATA was forecasting a collective $4.5 billion profit as of April 1. (Bloomberg)
