Baftas 2017: La La Land leads the 2017 winners' list

Hollywood musical La La Land led the field at last night's Baftas at the Royal Albert Hall in London but fell short of expectations.

It picked up five awards: best film; best director for Damien Chazelle; best actress for Emma Stone; best original music, and best cinematography. However, it failed to take predicted wins for original screenplay, costume design, sound, production design and editing.

Casey Affleck (below) was named best actor for Manchester by the Sea, which also picked up the best original screenplay award for Kenneth Lonergan.

The award for supporting actress went to Viola Davis (below) in Fences.

Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel (below) won best supporting actor for his role in Lion, while the award for outstanding British film went to Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake and comedy legend Mel Brooks received the 2017 Bafta Fellowship.

Last night's result have cast doubts over La La Land scooping the board at the Oscars on 26 February. It is up for a record-tying 14 nominations, but the Baftas suggest "more modest expectations should be in store and voters may be more diligent in picking and choosing where to show the love", says Deadline.

Best documentary: 13th

Best film not in the English language: Son of Saul

Best adapted screenplay: Lion

Best supporting actress: Viola Davis (Fences)

Best animated film: Kubo and the Two Strings

Best special visual effects: The Jungle Book

Best debut by a British writer, director or producer: Under the Shadow – Babak Anvari (writer/director), Emily Leo, Oliver Roskill, Lucan Toh (producers)

Best supporting actor: Dev Patel (Lion)

Outstanding British contribution to cinema: Curzon Cinemas

Best original screenplay: Manchester By the Sea

Best cinematography: La La Land

Best actor: Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea)
