The gloves are (almost) off. On 6 October, nearly a month after Apple unveiled its larger and more professional tablet, the iPad Pro, Microsoft is expected to hit back with its counterpart: the Surface Pro 4.

Expectations are high. The model's predecessor, the Surface Pro 3, launched to a warm reception last year, described by critics as "one of the best hybrids for business" and "arguably a better work machine than an iPad".

So what is expected this time? Microsoft is yet to divulge details. But market reports and industry rumours leave plenty to get excited about.

Sizes

Microsoft is expected to unveil two versions of the Surface Pro 4. One will have a 12-inch display, slightly smaller than the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, while the other version could trump it entirely with a 14-inch screen. The technology website alphr.com, suggests Microsoft might even unveil a "mini" eight-inch model that would be slightly larger than Apple's Mini 3 to cater for all sizes and purposes.

Processors

Intel has just unveiled its new range of small and powerful Skylake processors. Expect these to be utilised by the Surface Pro 4, resulting in a thinner and lighter experience. Business Insider says: "Skylake has serious performance benefits including the ability to handle 4K video output at 60 frames per second, a fact that would validate the Surface Pro 4 even further in terms of being a serious machine."

Pricing

Pricing will range from £639 to £1,349 depending on the device. The Surface Pro 3 was sold in Microsoft's online stores and through its partner retailers, such as John Lewis in the UK. The same is expected to be true for the Surface Pro 4. However, Microsoft is also expected to open its first flagship retail store on Fifth Avenue in New York City this autumn, just blocks away from one of Apple's four Manhattan storefronts.

Software

The Surface Pro 4 will include Windows 10, which most reviewers found to be "a big improvement" on Windows 8. CNET's Nate Ralph says the operating system blends the "familiar dependability" of Windows 7 and the "forward-looking touchscreen vision of Windows 8". It includes an Internet Explorer replacement called Edge and Cortana, a voice-controlled virtual assistant similar to Apple's Siri.

Security and connectivity

The Surface Pro 4 is likely to feature Windows Hello supported by an infrared camera or a keyboard fingerprint sensor. The Surface Pro 3 came under sharp criticism for lacking any mobile broadband connectivity. Many believe Microsoft must correct this in its upcoming tablet if it is to be a serious challenger to Apple. In just over a week we shall find out if it has met that expectation. As well as all the others.
