A new route: BeeLine device breathes fresh air into cycling

A smart invention by two avid cyclists is taking navigation back to basics by replacing step-by-step instructions with a simple compass to point riders in the right direction. BeeLine founders Tom Putnam and Mark Jenner wanted to put the fun back into cycling by giving users the freedom to navigate their journey and take slightly different routes each time, even on regular commutes.
The simple, pocket-sized device is designed to attach quickly and easily to any style of handlebar, using a secure silicone strap. Once mounted, users need only glance down briefly to ensure they're the right track, and for an update on the remaining distance to their destination.
Connected via Bluetooth to the BeeLine smartphone app (which is both iOS and Android compatible), sensors in the device receive constant directional updates from a GPS system to ensure cyclists stay on course. An additional "waypoints" feature enables the programming of any specific points the route should encompass – a favourite coffee shop, for example. More importantly, this function also allows cyclists to avoid potential delays by mapping out a rough route that counteracts any known obstacles. For example, if a river crossing forms part of the journey, BeeLine needs to know to take this into account, so it's advisable for users to plot a waypoint indicating which bridge they wish to use.

It's important to note that users of the device will need to stay alert, paying attention to road signs and traffic news so they don't get caught out by dead ends, one-way systems or unexpected disruptions such as road works. However, this is something advocates of the system don't have a problem with: "We've become too dependent on technology and it's eroding our cognitive skills," says Putnam. "Beeline provides reassurance you are on the right track, with the benefit of still using your own intuition to get you there safely and efficiently. It means you stay more engaged with the world around you and build up a genuine knowledge of the areas you travel through, as well as exercising your attention and observation skills rather than just being on auto pilot."
With a tough weatherproof casing, a battery life of up to four weeks on one charge and three colour options to choose from, this handy new invention offers cyclists a revived sense of adventure and the opportunity to discover something new every day, even on the most familiar journeys.
