Cardi B stole the show on the 2019 Grammys red carpet last night with a dress that appeared to pay homage to Botticelli’s Birth of Venus.

The rapper, who made history by becoming the first woman to win the Best Rap Album award, “made sure all eyes were on her as she showed up to the glitzy award show in the vintage Thierry Mugler couture dress from 1995”, says the London Evening Standard.

Some online commentators were concerned about how the star would be able to sit in the “clam shell”-topped design, but she changed into a less extravagant white evening gown for the ceremony.

Katy Perry’s choice of attire was also a talking point. The singer, who performed with Dolly Parton at the awards show, wore a Balmain gown from the French brand’s spring 2019 couture collection.

While Perry’s hair and make-up were widely praised online, the bell shape of her ruffled skirt reminded critics of, separately, a pastry, a doll, a flamingo and more.

Another pink ensemble that got a mixed reaction was Kylie Jenner’s statement suit, which HuffPost described as “a Yeezy Barbie doll and an outfit from The Breakfast Club rolled into one creation”.

Some music fans complained that this year’s ceremony was a little lacking in star power, thanks to some major snubs - “neither Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Kanye West, nor Ariana Grande was nominated in any of the major categories, and therefore each was not in attendance”, notes Vox.

But Philadelphia rapper Tierra Whack certainly got the audience talking with a fluffy floor-length rainbow dress by Philly-based designer Nancy Beringer.

Meanwhile, singer-songwriter Janelle Monae impressed red-carpet watchers with an angular white dress and safety pins hat from Jean Paul Gaultier.

Multi-instrumentalist St. Vincent also won praise from the fashion faithful with a floral caped gown from Giambattista Valli Couture.
