What if running shoes could analyze a runner’s technique?
An improper stride can sideline even the most dedicated runner with an injury. But what if your running shoes could tell you what you’re doing wrong? That’s where the Runsafer project comes in. These sensor-laden sneakers, developed by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, “provide real-time feedback on your running style,” said Andrew Liszewski in Gizmodo.com. A biometric sensor built into the sole works in conjunction with an accelerometer and GPS hardware to analyze a runner’s technique. The data is then beamed via Bluetooth to an app that offers intelligent recommendations for how you can improve—for instance, by striking the ground with more of the forefoot. The Runsafer project, which is still in development, aims to help users develop healthier, more joint-friendly habits without a coach—and hopefully to keep them on their feet.
