This documentary “offers a warm and largely satisfying” tribute to the late Levon Helm, a singer-drummer best known as a member of The Band, said the Los Angeles Times. The film uses some 1960s footage, but mostly focuses on Helm’s work on Dirt Farmer, a 2007 comeback album.

Melissa McCarthy is the best thing about this ribald recent buddy-cop comedy, but she can’t overcome its “underwhelming script,” said the Tampa Bay Times. Co-star Sandra Bullock finally steps up her game in the final act, offering hope that a sequel might be considerably funnier.

This “coolly assured” Danish film about the hijacking of a cargo ship doesn’t have Tom Hanks in the lead role, but it’s “never anything other than riveting,” said The Boston Globe. Hanks’s current hit, Captain Phillips, puts one man in peril; here it’s the ship’s whole crew.
