Charity of the week: Homes for Our Troops
Since 2004, Homes for Our Troops has built more than 100 homes for disabled U.S. veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Homes for Our Troops (homesforourtroops.org) builds specially designed houses for disabled U.S. veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since 2004, the organization has built more than 100 homes in 28 states, often with donated materials and volunteer labor, at no cost to the veterans and their families. The houses’ individually tailored floor plans are designed to maximize comfort, convenience, and access for those with severe combat-inflicted disabilities, including multiple amputations. Over the past decade, several thousand troops have suffered injuries severe enough to require specially adapted homes. Homes for Our Troops has recently launched a fund-raising drive to help it build at least 100 more homes by 2014.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator ranks not-for-profit organizations on the effectiveness of their programs, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
