Charity of the week: StoryCorps
StoryCorps gives Americans the opportunity to record, share, and preserve their oral histories.
Declaring that “every voice matters,” StoryCorps (storycorps.org) provides Americans from all walks of life with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve their oral histories. Since 2003, the organization has recorded more than 35,000 interviews around the country, each of them preserved at the Library of Congress’s American Folklife Center, with the aim of creating an archive of American voices. Personal histories from the organization’s collection are featured weekly on National Public Radio. In 2005, StoryCorps launched its September 11th Initiative, which to date has recorded the experiences of more than 1,100 World Trade Center and Pentagon survivors, police officers, rescue workers, and others affected by the terrorist attacks.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator ranks not-for-profit organizations on the effectiveness of their programs, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
