Facebook bites spam, Music pirates buy more tunes
Good day for canning spam, Bad day for fighting pirates
GOOD DAY FOR: Canning spam, after Facebook was awarded $711 million in damages from “Spam King” Sanford Wallace. U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel said Wallace and an associate violated the federal CAN-SPAM law “with blatant disregard” by phishing for Facebook users’ passwords and then using their accounts for commercial gain. Facebook had asked for $7.5 billion in damages. (San Francisco Chronicle)
BAD DAY FOR: Fighting pirates, after a British survey found that people who admit to illegally downloading music also spend almost twice as much on music as those who don’t pirate music. According to the survey, conducted by Ipsos Mori for the think-tank Demos, music pirates spend about $130 a year on music, compared with the average of $70. (The Independent)
