Alvin and the Chipmunks, Bette Davis Centenary Celebration Collection, From the Taviani Brothers

Alvin and the Chipmunks

(20th Century Fox, $29.99)

The DVD of this box-office hit is more for the kids than anyone else, said John Serba in the Grand Rapids, Mich., Press. The recent film version of the 1950s furry phenomenon comes with fun featurettes but unfortunately “not a crowbar to pry” those catchy little numbers out of your head.

Bette Davis Centenary Celebration Collection

(20th Century Fox, $49.99)

Bette Davis would have turned 100 this year, said Chris Smith in the Bangor, Maine, Daily News. This collection features five films from the latter part of her career. The main attraction is 1950’s All About Eve, in which Davis plays a fading star with a “vitality the screen barely could contain.”

From the Taviani Brothers

(Koch Lober Films, $26.98 each)

Italian filmmakers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani are underappreciated in America, said Garrett Conti in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Now three of their contemporary classics—Fiorile, Kaos, and The Night of the Shooting Stars—are available here. All were honored in Italy with David di Donatello awards—the equivalent of the Oscar.
