New cars: What the critics say
Volvo C30 Price: $22,700
ForbesLife
The C30 is a marriage between sexy sportiness and Volvo’s “safety-first image.” The 227-hp, 2.5-liter, turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine comes with a choice of six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. We particularly liked the stylish interior, well-contoured seats, and spacious leg- and headroom. The passenger compartment is protected by five different grades of steel in both front and back.

This all-new hatchback, with its sloping rear and “aggressive, fast-forward stance,” looks different from its siblings in the Volvo family. Its four bucket seats are also “a big departure from the usual Volvo family hauler.” The C30 will go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, making it easily the “sharpest tool” in this carmaker’s shed.
Car and Driver
The C30 is by far the most attractive automobile to come out of Sweden in years. Unfortunately, it probably won’t “lure too many thrill-seekers out of their Mini Coopers and VW GTIs.” The C30 is basically an S40 sedan “in hot pants.” It may look sexy, but underneath that sleek interior is a fairly flabby performer.
