Women head west.
The week's news at a glance.
Berlin
Young women are abandoning the former East Germany in droves, leaving behind an increasingly bitter, male-dominated underclass. A study by the Berlin Institute for Population and Development found that while men and women leave the east in roughly equal numbers, seeking jobs, far fewer women return. The women, the study noted, tend to be better educated and therefore better able to find work. German commentators worry that the prospect of staying single and jobless could drive more young men to join neo-Nazi groups.
