Tens of thousands of Bangladeshis thronged the streets this week to greet former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed, after the military-backed interim government let her back into the country. “No one can stop me,” Hasina said. “This is my country. They cannot keep me from coming back.” During Hasina’s recent trip to the U.S., the Bangladeshi government held up her return for a week, charging her with murder and extortion and threatening to force her into exile. The government accuses Hasina of encouraging deadly violence between her supporters and those of her rival, Khaleda Zia, in street riots last year. The violence prompted the installation of the interim government, which promptly canceled elections.
