Tycoon in trouble
The week's news at a glance.
Seoul
A prominent South Korean businessman was accused of kidnapping and beating up eight people who he believed had jumped his son in a bar. Police said they were seeking the arrest of Kim Seung-youn, 55, chairman and CEO of South Korea’s 10th-biggest conglomerate, Hanwha. Kim was allegedly getting revenge for his son, Kim Dong-won, a Yale student taking a semester at Seoul University. When the younger Kim came home with an eye injury requiring 13 stitches, his father reportedly took him and several bodyguards back to the bar to punish the perpetrators. “The statements of the victims are very concrete and consistent,” police said. South Korean tycoons are often charged with bribery, but this is the first time one has been accused of assault.
