Hawaii shaken
The week's news at a glance.
Honolulu
An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale shook Hawaii last week, triggering landslides, raising fears of tsunamis, and causing widespread power outages. The quake was not strong enough to trigger a tidal wave, scientists later said, but buildings near the quake’s epicenter, off the western shore of the island of Hawaii, were damaged, and Gov. Linda Lingle declared the state a disaster area. “It shook very strongly and knocked the televisions off the bureaus in the hotel, ” said Lingle, who was in a hotel on Hawaii island when the quake hit. No deaths were reported.
