Carnage on trains

The week's news at a glance.

Bombay

At least 135 people were killed and hundreds more injured this week when terrorists struck commuter trains in Bombay during rush hour. Survivors told of hideous scenes, saying they had to clamber over the severed limbs of their fellow passengers to escape the blood-spattered trains. Indian police suspected that the seven bombs, which detonated almost simultaneously in five trains and two stations, were planted by Kashmiri separatists. Militants from Kashmir, a province claimed by both India and Pakistan, have been blamed for numerous attacks in India in the past few years. The Bombay train system is one of the world’s busiest, with more than 6 million passengers a day.
