Not so gay-friendly
The week's news at a glance.
Warsaw
Poland is officially turning homophobic, Human Rights Watch charged this week. The international group said that the right-wing Law and Justice Party, which took power last fall, is oppressing gays under the guise of spurring a “moral revival.” It cited comments by President Lech Kaczynski, who as mayor of Warsaw banned a gay-pride parade because, he said, he “was unwilling to meet perverts.” Kaczynski’s twin brother, Jaroslaw, a powerful member of parliament and head of the Law and Justice Party, abolished the government office that dealt with discrimination issues, and has proposed banning gays from teaching in schools. Polish politicians shrugged off the complaints, noting that Poland is an overwhelmingly Catholic country.
