Belafonte slams Bush
The week's news at a glance.
Caracas, Venezuela
Leading a delegation to Venezuela to support socialist President Hugo Chavez, singer and activist Harry Belafonte this week called President Bush a “tyrant” and a “terrorist.” Appearing with Chavez on a national broadcast, the 78-year-old singer told the Venezuelan leader: “No matter what the greatest tyrant in the world, the greatest terrorist in the world, George W. Bush, says, we’re here to tell you: Not hundreds, not thousands, but millions of the American people support your revolution.” A veteran of the civil-rights movement, Belafonte has become increasingly radical in recent years, calling Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice “house slaves,” and comparing black Republicans to Jews who worked for Hitler.
