Al Qaida, unfiltered

The week's news at a glance.

An Internet news broadcast purportedly made by al Qaida hit the Web this week. The 16-minute program, Voice of the Caliphate, was presented by a masked anchorman, with a Koran resting on the table in front of him and a rifle mounted on a tripod behind him. He reported the Israeli pullout from Gaza as a “great victory” and praised Allah for sending hurricanes to New Orleans, “city of homosexuals.” The production quality was low—an image of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al Qaida in Iraq, was onscreen for much of the broadcast. But there was a commercial break, advertising a new movie called Total Jihad. It’s unclear how frequently the al Qaida show will be broadcast.
