Political feud
The week's news at a glance.
Mexico City
Controversial charges against the popular mayor of Mexico City, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, are eroding what’s left of President Vicente Fox’s popularity. The government plans to prosecute Lopez Obrador over an obscure land dispute. He is gearing up to run for president next year, and early polls show him far ahead of the candidate from Fox’s party and other contenders. But he will be disqualified if he goes to trial. In polls, 60 percent of Mexicans said the charges against Lopez Obrador were political, and nearly 1 million protesters gathered in the capital over the weekend to support him. “I’m here to defend the democracy of my country,” said one demonstrator, “or what’s left of it.”
