Rapport with China
The week's news at a glance.
Delhi
India and China announced a “strategic partnership” this week, with a joint pledge to increase trade and solve their border dispute. The two countries have been at odds since 1959, when India gave asylum to the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan leader China considers a separatist. In 1962, they went to war over the demarcation of their 2,500-mile mutual border. But Indian and Chinese leaders said this week that the two rapidly developing nations would now work together, particularly in the information technology industry. “If India and China cooperate,” said Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao during a visit to Delhi, “we will be able to lead the world.” Together, the two countries account for one-third of the world’s population.
